FAMILY PROMISE
We are still a Family Promise church, BUT we don't have overnight sleeping accommodations any more since we don't have the state-mandated shower required for all shelters. There will still be opportunities for us to help with cooking, socializing, and more. Continue to check the UUCB announcements and eBlast for updates.
FAMILY PROMISE
Family Promise of Western New York was created to unite religious and other organizations in responding to the needs of homeless families in our community. The network provides temporary shelter, meals and assistance to homeless families, keeping families together in a safe environment, even as the program staff support the families to seek their own independence. Family Promise is an amazing example of leveraging existing resources – opening the doors and spaces of church buildings as host sites, and opening the hearts and hands of church members – to serve folks who need a lift on their way toward sustainable independence.
As a Host/Support Congregation, UUCB provides a week of lodging, meals and caring hospitality to homeless families four times each year. We have been hosting families since 2011. Volunteers are essential to the program, and provide a wide range of services such as preparing and serving meals; playing with children or helping with homework; interacting with guests with respect and compassion; and providing safe overnight housing in the church. We also help support the organization financially.
The UUCB Family Promise leaders and volunteers enthusiastically report a positive experience. They have also begun to partner with other area churches that work with us as supporting congregations. For further information about the program, or to volunteer, please email nlaurienwilkins@yahoo.com.
